Chennai: Puthiya Tamizhagam (PT) leader M Krishnasamy, whose party represents the Devendrakula Vellalar, a dalit sect, on Friday met chief minister J Jayalalithaa at her residence and offered his party’s support to AIADMK in the Sanakarankoil assembly byelection.
A press release from the AIADMK headquarters later confirmed the PT’s support to the AIADMK. The release said Krishnasamy offered to support AIADMK candidate S Muthuselvi for which party chief Jayalalithaa thanked him. Finance minister and party treasurer O Panneerselvam was also present during the meeting.
The PT, which has the support of a sizeable chunk of dalits in the constituency, had secured about 20,000 votes in the Sankarankoil segment in Tenkasi Lok Sabha constituency in the 2009 elections. PT leader Krishnasamy had contested the Lok Sabha election in Tenkasi. While the party was part of the AIADMK-led alliance for the assembly polls, it was ousted from the front for the local body elections last year.
The rift between the AIADMK and the PT widened after the police firing in Paramakudi in Ramanathapuram district in September last year in which six dalit protesters were killed. Relations between the two parties soured with Krishnasamy vehemently opposing the AIADMK in the assembly too.
In a turnaround, the PT has now declared support for the AIADMK for the byelection. Krishnasamy was non-committal on the issue a couple of days back during a media interaction. “After the Paramakudi firing, we demanded a judicial enquiry, . 5 lakh compensation for each of the bereaved families and a government job for one member of each of the families. Now that they have accepted all these demands, we have decided to support the AIADMK for the byelection,” Krishnasamy told Last Terminal.
